What is MACD? How to Read & How to Use MACD Indicator

The MACD line is calculated by subtracting the 26-period EMA from the 12-period EMA. A nine-day EMA of the MACD line is called the signal line, plotted on top of the MACD line, which can function as a trigger for buy or sell signals. What you’re looking for is to see how close the crossover matches with the reversal on your chart.

  • Divergence is another important signal, occurring when the price of an asset moves in the opposite direction of the MACD indicator.
  • Conversely, negative and increasing histogram bars suggest strengthening bearish momentum.
  • The MACD uses exponential moving averages (EMAs) because they respond faster to recent price changes than simple moving averages (SMAs).
  • With the Moving Average Convergence Divergence, the primary buy sign to look for is when it crosses the signal line.
  • The default is 14 periods with values bounded from 0 to 100.

  • Modifying these parameters alters the MACD’s sensitivity to price fluctuations.
  • I don’t consider the moving average convergence divergence a trade signal indicator because I don’t consider a moving average crossover a trade entry signal.
  • It occurs when the price action forms higher highs while the MACD forms lower highs or when the price action forms lower lows with the MACD forming higher lows.
  • It is not uncommon for investors to use the MACD’s histogram the same way they may use the MACD itself.

As a result, the trend is determined, and then trades that go with said trend. For example, if you trade on the 4-hour chart, you would want to look at the daily chart with the MACD to develop a trend bias. We clearly understand how to read MACD and where the signals come from. We may begin developing a few strategies that use these signals. Confirmation should be sought by trend-following indicators, such as the Directional Movement Index (DMI) system and its key component, the Average Directional Index (ADX).

It might be more accurate to use the MACD to confirm a reversal than to spot one. Here’s where traders use the concept of divergence to make an educated guess about possible reversal. I recommend you study some charts with EMAs, the corresponding MACD lines, and enough price action to see how things how to read the macd mesh. Remember, it’s easy to get caught up in technical indicators only to miss the bigger picture. These are tools — no matter what anyone says it’s not an exact science.

When that distance hits unusually high levels, it can signal that the market is moving too fast. If the overall trend is up, that crossover might signal the start of a new push higher. Traders often see this as a chance to ride the next leg of the trend. It tells you how momentum is shifting, whether a move is gaining strength or starting to run out of steam.
